Meet the Acupuncturist

Born and educated in Beijing, China, I have always had dream to become a therapist. Back in my 20s, after a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Literature, I did a Certificate in Acupuncture, Chinese Medicine and Qigong in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. Since I came to New Zealand in 2000, I worked in varied jobs including acupuncture clinics and international education and finally in 2016 just after my 50th birthday, I started a 3 year course towards a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Acupuncture from the New Zealand College of Chinese Medicine. After graduation, I worked closely with doctors, physiotherapists, and chiropractors, as well as running a home based clinic in Sandringham, Auckland. I treated patients with a wide range of conditions, from musculo-skeletal pain to psycho-emotional disorders such as insomnia, depression, and anxiety; post stroke; post cancer treatment care and gynecological disorders. I completed the degree (an extra year) towards a Bachelor of Health Science majoring in Chinese Medicine in 2020.

With my retired husband, we moved to Coromandel in January 2021 and set up my new clinic Coromandel Community Acupuncture and has received a great support from the community. For the past two years, I have established myself as a local acupuncturist and have been working with doctors and other health professionals. Word of mouth is my main resource of new patients. In December 2022 we finally moved to our new house at Wyuna Bay and my home clinic has amazing views of rolling hills and both the harbour and the ocean, which I have dreamed to provide as a healing paradise for my patients. In November 2022, I expanded my practice to Whitianga which has offered me the opportunity to work closely with even more health professionals. I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to a wider population in the peninsula.

The core principle of my practice is to provide affordable and accessible services to improve the health and wellbeing for the community.

I am also a Taichi teacher and have been dedicated to this ancient practice for over 20 years. I look for the holistic approach with my patients and assist them to maintain their health in a taichi way. I have been running weekly Tai chi classes in Coromandel and Colville since February 2021.

In my spare time, I am a keen ocean swimmer (member of Coromandel Dolphins), tramper, and enjoy music, photography, and the arts.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the longest established forms of healthcare and an important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), in which fine needles are inserted at specific points of the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes.

Traditional acupuncture is based on the theory that an energy, or “life force” known as Qi, flows through the body in channels called meridians. If Qi doesn’t flow freely through the body, there might be illness such as pain. Acupuncture is believed to restore the flow of Qi, thereby strengthening the energy and improving health. The treatment focus is on you as an individual, a whole being, as well as your symptoms to restore your physical, emotional and mental equilibrium.

Modern research shows that the use of acupuncture may involve stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscles, resulting in the body producing natural substances, such as endorphins, our body’s own painkillers. It is possible that these naturally released substances can result in biochemical changes to promote physical and emotional wellbeing.

Acupuncture is used most commonly for pain relief in such conditions as musculoskeletal pain, migraines, as well as for a wide range of conditions like insomnia, anxiety, and other psycho-emotional disorders; gastrointestinal complains such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); post-cancer treatment and the like.

Conditions

WHO mentioned acupuncture can deal with 100 conditions but some of them might be better off in conjunction with other therapies. In which case I will try to recommend other appropriate modalities. I might be able to help with the following.

● Pain management:  sport injuries, sciatica, arthritic pain, fibromyalgia, migraines
● Psycho-emotional disorders: anxiety, depression, insomnia
● Immunity strengthening: recovery from long Covid
● Cardiovascular health: blood pressure
● Gastrointestinal issues: IBS, acid reflux
● Skin diseases: acne, eczema, shingles
● Respiratory: asthma, rhinitis
● Urino-genital health: frequent urination, sexual dysfunction, urinary tract infection
● Gynaecological disorders: menstruation issues, menopausal syndrome, morning sickness,
  inducing delivery, Infertility support

● Neuromuscular conditions: Parkinson’s disease, post stroke recovery
● Cancer care and post operation support
